IELTS Band Score Requirements

IELTS is created to assess your English language skills at all the levels. You cannot fail the test. The IELTS score you receive is based on each of the four skills on a scale of 1-9, and you will also be awarded an overall band score. You can score in terms of whole numerical (e.g. 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5) bands in all the parts of the test.

If you intend to emigrate your overall band score may be crucial, to apply for a university or take up a job in an English speaking country.

In the overall band score of 9, 6.5 is considered as a good score and 7 is preferable. The IELTS score requirement may vary from different countries and different colleges but 7 is a good score for most of the countries.

Meaning of the IELTS Band Score

Band	User	Description
9	Expert user	You have a full viable command over the language. You use proper English with accurate fluency. You show complete understanding.
8	Very good user	You have a fully viable command over the language with only rare unsystematic mistakes and improper usage. You may not understand some things in unfamiliar situations. You can very well handle the detailed argumentation in this complex language.
7	Good user	You have a viable command over the language, although few mistakes, improper usage and misconceptions in some situations. You can reason every detail.
6	Competent user	Normally you have a powerful command over the language although some mistakes, improper usage and misconception. You can understand and use this complex language, especially in familiar situations.
5	Modest user	You have a limited command over the language, and can understand overall meaning in the most of the situations, even though you make many mistakes. You should be able to hold the language in basic communication on your own.
4	Limited user	Your initial competency level is very less to familiar situations. There are constant problems being shown in understanding and expression. You are finding the language complicated.
3	Extremely limited user	You can understand and convey only general meanings of very familiar situations of day to day life. There are regular breakdowns in communication.
2	Intermittent user	You have a problem in understanding written English and spoken English.
1	Non user	You don’t have the capability to use the language besides for a few words.
0	Did not attempt the test	You did not answer the questions.
